Traditional teaching in classrooms, using textbooks and whiteboards, is often a huge slog for most of us. If this sounds like you, dig around for more practical courses that are multimedia based. Research over recent years has time and time again demonstrated that connecting physically with our study, is much more conducive to long-term memory.

You can now study via self-contained CD or DVD materials. Instructor-led tutorials will mean you'll absorb the modules, one by one, by way of the expert demonstrations. Knowledge can then be tested by interacting with the software and practicing yourself. Each company you're contemplating should be able to show you a few examples of their training materials. Make sure you encounter videos of instructor-led classes and many interactive sections.

Go for CD and DVD ROM based physical training media where possible. You can then avoid all the difficulties of the variability of broadband quality and service.

If there's any chance you'll be enrolling with a training academy who is still pushing workshop days as part of their program, then take note of these typical downsides experienced by most trainees:

- All that travelling - frequent visits and often 100's of miles each time.

- Asking for constant holidays or time off - many colleges will only provide weekday availability and link several days together. If you're working then this can be difficult, and this is made worse if you include the travel time on top.

- Lost annual leave - many workers are given only twenty days of leave annually. If half or more of that is used up by training classes, you haven't got a great deal of holiday time remaining for students and their families.

- Workshops normally become over full.

- Workshop pace - classes can contain trainees of mixed talent, consequently tension can be created between the quicker-learners and those who prefer a more relaxed pace.

- A lot of attendees report that the (not inconsiderable) costs of all the travelling back and forth to the training venue and paying for food and accommodation can get very high.

- The majority of trainees want to keep their training private and therefore avoiding all management questions at work.

- Asking questions in the presence of other class-mates will sometimes make us a little uncomfortable. Surely, at some point, you've avoided asking a question because you didn't want to appear stupid?

- More often than not, events become simply unreachable, where you work or live away for some part of the year.

For a far more flexible approach, utilise ready-made, videoed classes in the comfort of your own home - and do it when it's convenient to you - not some other person. Consider... If you've got a laptop you can work wherever you happen to be at that time. And live 24x7 support is an online click away in case you get challenged. Just re-watch and re-cover the elements as often as you want or need. And of course, you won't need to scribble any notes because the class is available whenever you want it. Could it get any simpler: Time and money is saved and travelling is avoided altogether; and of course you end up with a more peaceful training environment.

A lot of commercial training providers will only provide support to you inside of office hours (typically 9am-6pm) and sometimes a little earlier or later; most won't answer after 8-9pm at the latest and frequently never at the weekends. Avoid, like the plague, any organisations who use 'out-of-hours' call-centres - where an advisor will call back during office hours. This is no use if you're stuck and want support there and then.

If you look properly, you'll find professional companies which provide their students online direct access support 24x7 - at any time of day or night. Never make the mistake of compromise with the quality of your support. The majority of students who throw in the towel, would have had a different experience if they'd got the right support package in the first place.

At times individuals don't catch on to what IT is doing for all of us. Society largely thinks that the increase in technology we've had over recent years is cooling down. All indicators point in the opposite direction. You should only consider training courses which will lead to industry acknowledged qualifications. There are loads of small colleges suggesting minor 'in-house' certificates that are essentially useless when it comes to finding a job. All the major IT organisations such as Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco or Adobe have nationally acknowledged skills courses. Huge conglomerates such as these will give some sparkle to your CV.
